Graded by PCGS as AU Detail, this coin offers a glimpse into Cuba’s past, but acquiring such pieces can pose challenges due to various historical factors. Obverse has the cuban coat of arms, name of the country above, fineness on sides. Reverse has the head of Leonor Molina facing right between date, representing the Republic, motto on circular legend above, “SOUVENIR” During the late 19th century, Cuba was undergoing significant political and social upheaval, which impacted its coinage. This coin was used issued to raise money for the Cuban Revolutionary Party war of independence against Spain with a promise to be redeemed for one dollar at the end of the war. Since the United States joined into the Spanish-American War in 1898, the need for the Cuban Revolutionary Party to raise money for their independence became unnecessary. Furthermore, the original order of three milion 1897 souvenir peso was not fulfilled so the mintages are as follows; 828 Type 1s minted in Philadelphia, 4,286 Type 2s and 4,856 Type 3s minted in Providence, Rhode Island. Curiously, these were the only souvenir coins delvered so more could have been made and not delivered. Despite these challenges, the allure of Cuban coins persists among numismatists, who appreciate their historical significance and scarcity.
