Cyathea tomentosissima is a compact and elegant tree fern, reaching up to 8ft in height with fronds up to 4ft long. Native to the cool mountain cloud forests of New Guinea, it is very slow growing and develops a distinctive trunk covered in thick, reddish-brown hairs as it matures. This fern prefers a shady position, though it can tolerate sun if given extra water. It is one of the most drought-tolerant tree ferns and is very rare in cultivation. Hardy to around -3C for short periods once mature, it usually benefits from winter protection.
