Clematis vitalba (Traveller’s Joy / Old Man’s Beard) in 2.25L Pot

A vigorous climber for covering shady walls and arches, this deciduous clematis has lush green foliage and clusters of scented creamy-white flowers from mid-summer to early autumn. The flowers are followed by long-lasting silky seedheads, giving the plant its “old man’s beard” appearance. Plant climbers at least 30–45cm (12–18in), and ideally 45–60cm (18–24in), away from walls or fences to avoid dry soil and improve root growth. Keep even greater distance when planting near trees or shrubs. Choose a position in well-drained, fertile soil with at least 6 hours of sunlight for best flowering. Keep roots cool and shaded by planting low-growing plants or applying a mulch of well-rotted compost, avoiding the base of the stem. In early spring, cut back last year’s stems to a pair of strong buds about 15–20cm (6–8in) above ground level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser. This wildlife-friendly plant supports moth larvae and grows best in neutral to alkaline soil, adding both ornamental and ecological value to the garden. Supplied in a 2.25 litre pot
