Edge: Reeded Historical Significance The Franklin Half Dollar series (1948–1963) marked the only U.S. coin to depict Benjamin Franklin. The 1956 issue, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, was produced in relatively modest numbers compared to later dates, with a mintage of 4,032,000 coins. The series ended abruptly in 1963 after Franklin was replaced by John F. Kennedy following his assassination.
