Times letters: Boosting the health and social care workforce – The Times

Sir, The social care crisis (news, Jan 16; letter, Jan 18) could be improved if care workers were given training, a career structure and a pay rise. The work in care homes is hard and a great deal of patience is required with often little reward.
City and Guilds of London Institute provided courses teaching these skills for many years and national vocational qualifications were introduced so a person could progress in childcare and other care careers. Many of these courses ran in further education colleges. Unfortunately, the government suggested that pupils should aim for university after leaving school so many colleges abandoned these courses and all the practical students that might have been interested in care careers went into other jobs.
